How to Find Your Audi PR Code — And Why It Matters for Matrix Headlights

Before you can unlock Matrix headlights on your US Audi, there is one number you need to know: your headlight PR code. It tells you exactly what hardware is installed. This guide shows you three ways to find it — takes about two minutes.

What Is a PR Code?

A PR code (Production Code) is a two-to-four character code that identifies each individual option or piece of equipment fitted to your Audi from the factory. Every significant component — engine, transmission, seats, audio system, and yes, headlights — gets its own PR code.

PR codes are not the same as VIN options or trim levels. Two cars with identical trim levels and the same exterior can have different headlight PR codes, depending on what the original buyer ordered or what the dealer configured.

For Matrix headlights, these are the two codes that matter:

  • PR-8G4 — Matrix LED headlights
  • PR-8G5 — Matrix HD (High Definition) LED headlights

If you find either 8G4 or 8G5 in your equipment list, your Audi has factory Matrix LED hardware and can be activated. Which method and price tier applies to your specific car depends on your model and year — send us your VIN and we'll confirm before any payment is taken.

If you have neither 8G4 nor 8G5, your Audi has standard LED headlights and Matrix activation is not possible on your specific vehicle.

Method 1 — myAudi App

If your vehicle is connected to your myAudi account:

  1. Open the myAudi app on your phone
  2. Select your vehicle
  3. Go to Vehicle details or Vehicle information
  4. Look for Equipment or Options — some app versions list PR codes directly

The app is the most convenient option if your Audi is linked. The level of detail shown depends on your model year and region. US myAudi accounts sometimes show abbreviated equipment lists — if you cannot find 8G4 or 8G5 listed, try the Monroney sticker method below or just send us your VIN.

Method 2 — Monroney Sticker (Window Sticker)

Every new Audi sold in the US comes with a Monroney sticker (the window sticker). If you still have yours — or if the dealer can pull it up — it lists all factory options including PR codes.

Look for the "Additional Options" or "Standard Features" section. Audi PR codes appear as two-to-four character alphanumeric codes next to each listed feature.

If you bought the car used and no longer have the original sticker, some dealers can retrieve it via the VIN. Alternatively, the Audi USA website's "Build your own" configurator page sometimes lets you decode a VIN into its option codes.

Practical tip: If your sticker lists "Matrix LED Headlights" as an option, you have PR-code 8G4. If it lists "Matrix HD Headlights" or "HD Matrix LED Headlights", you have PR-code 8G5. Both are activatable.

Method 3 — Send Us Your VIN (Free)

The most reliable option — and it costs nothing.

Submit your VIN on any model page below. We decode the full factory equipment specification, confirm whether you have PR-code 8G4 or 8G5, and tell you exactly which activation applies to your car before any payment is made.

This is the method we recommend if you are unsure, because a VIN lookup also catches edge cases — for example, vehicles built with Matrix housing but without the full control module, or market-specific variants with non-standard headlight configurations.

What If I Have Neither 8G4 Nor 8G5?

If your Audi does not have PR-code 8G4 or 8G5, the car was built with standard LED headlights — not Matrix LED. In that case, software activation is not possible, because the Matrix LED segments, the individual light control modules, and the adaptive hardware physically are not there.

There is no software workaround for missing hardware. This is also why we always verify VINs before any payment is taken.

One exception: Some Audi dealers retrofitted Matrix headlight assemblies onto certain US models before or after delivery. If your car received a physical headlight retrofit (not just a software change), it may show PR-code 8G4 on the new modules even if the original factory sticker does not list it. VIN verification will catch this.
