How to Enable Matrix Headlights on Your US Audi — Every A, S, RS, Q, SQ & RS Q Variant

Your US-spec Audi already has Matrix LED headlights installed — but the software is turned off. Adaptive high beam, dynamic light distribution, highway mode, cornering mode, and (on Laser-equipped trims) Laser high beam — all present in hardware, all locked out in the North American software build. This guide covers every A, S, RS, Q, SQ, RS Q, allroad, Sportback, Avant and e-tron variant we activate, and how to unlock the technology you already paid for — with no VCDS, no dealer visit, no coding experience required.

What Are Matrix LED Headlights?

Matrix LED headlights are Audi's most advanced lighting technology. Unlike standard LED headlights, Matrix LEDs use an array of individually controllable LED segments that can selectively illuminate or dim specific areas of the road. This enables features like:

  • Adaptive High Beam Assist — Keeps high beams on while automatically masking oncoming vehicles and preceding traffic from the beam, providing maximum illumination without blinding other drivers.
  • Dynamic Light Distribution — Adjusts the light pattern based on speed, steering angle, and navigation data to optimize road coverage.
  • Highway Mode — Extends the beam range at higher speeds for better long-distance visibility.
  • Intersection Mode — Widens the beam pattern when approaching junctions for better peripheral visibility.
  • Laser High Beam — On Laser-equipped trims (typically RS 6 Avant, RS 7, S8, RS Q8, RS e-tron GT and higher A8 trims), the Laser unit engages at motorway speeds to dramatically extend high-beam range.

On European Audi models, all of these features are fully active from the factory. On US and Canadian models, regulatory differences mean the adaptive masking and dynamic features are software-disabled — even when the Matrix (and Laser) hardware is physically installed and fully connected.

Why Are Matrix Headlights Disabled on US Audi Models?

US federal lighting regulations (FMVSS 108) historically did not permit adaptive driving beam (ADB) systems that selectively mask portions of the high beam. As a result, Audi ships US-spec vehicles with the Matrix hardware installed but the advanced software features turned off — a pure software restriction, not a hardware limitation.

This means your US Audi already has all the physical components — the LED array, the camera, the light control module, and (on Laser trims) the Laser unit — but the Matrix functions are simply locked in the firmware. RetroLab Pro safely activates these dormant features on every supported model.

Note: NHTSA rules changed in 2022 to permit ADB systems, making this activation legal and even more relevant for US owners who want to unlock the technology Audi already engineered into their car.

Which Audi Models Support US Matrix Headlight Activation?

RetroLab Pro activates the US Matrix unlock on every MLBevo platform Audi — including all S, RS, allroad, Sportback and Avant variants, as long as the factory Matrix LED hardware is installed. Complete US Audi support matrix:

What Do You Need to Enable Matrix Headlights?

Enabling Matrix headlights with RetroLab Pro is straightforward:

Hardware Requirements:

  • A Windows PC with an ENet cable, OR an iPhone 15/16/17 with a USB-C to LAN adapter and ENet cable
  • An internet connection
  • Matrix LED headlights must be physically installed on your vehicle

No Additional Tools Required:

  • No VCDS or VAG-COM license needed
  • No OBDeleven or similar coding tool needed
  • No dealer visit or diagnostic appointment required
  • No prior coding experience required — RetroLab Pro provides fully guided steps

Model Year 2024+ vehicles with SFD2 protection are also supported for an additional €100 — these are performed via a guided remote session (Windows PC and ENet cable required). Model years 2018–2023 run directly through the RetroLab Pro app.

How Much Does the US Matrix Activation Cost?

Pricing is one-time, permanent, and VIN-locked. No subscriptions, no expiring credits, no dealer visits ever.

  • A4 / S4 / RS 4, A5 / S5 / RS 5, A6 / S6, A7 / S7, A8 / S8, Q5 / SQ5, Q7 / SQ7, Q8 / SQ8, e-tron GT / RS e-tron GT: €200 — activated directly in the RetroLab Pro app
  • RS 6 Avant, RS 7 Sportback, RS Q8: €200 — same app-based activation
  • e-tron GE (SUV / Sportback / S variants): €300 — performed via a guided remote session; requires a Windows PC and ENet cable

We always confirm compatibility for your specific VIN before you pay a cent.

Model Year 2024 and 2025 Audi — SFD2 US Matrix Activation

Every 2024 and 2025 Audi shipped to the United States and Canada now uses SFD2 — Audi's second-generation Secure Feature Distribution protocol. SFD2 encrypts every diagnostic write with a per-VIN key, and it locked out every third-party coding tool (VCDS, OBDeleven, MMI Prime, EEC) that used to be able to touch these modules. If you own a 2024 or 2025 US Audi with Matrix LED headlights, you have almost certainly already discovered this — most independent coders will tell you your car "cannot be coded".

RetroLab Pro supports every 2024 and 2025 US Audi model with SFD2 — including the entire A/S/RS/Q/SQ/RS Q lineup and both e-tron platforms:

  • 2024 & 2025 Audi A4, S4, RS 4 Avant (B9 facelift)
  • 2024 & 2025 Audi A5, S5, RS 5 Coupé / Sportback / Cabriolet (F5 facelift)
  • 2024 & 2025 Audi A6, S6, RS 6 Avant, A6 allroad (C8 facelift)
  • 2024 & 2025 Audi A7 Sportback, S7, RS 7 Sportback (C8 facelift)
  • 2024 & 2025 Audi A8, A8 L, S8 (D5 facelift)
  • 2024 & 2025 Audi Q5, SQ5, Q5 Sportback, SQ5 Sportback (FY facelift)
  • 2024 & 2025 Audi Q7, SQ7 (4M facelift)
  • 2024 & 2025 Audi Q8, SQ8, RS Q8 (4M8 facelift)
  • 2024 & 2025 Audi Q8 e-tron, SQ8 e-tron, Q8 e-tron Sportback, SQ8 e-tron Sportback (formerly e-tron GE — renamed to Q8 e-tron for MY24+)
  • 2024 & 2025 Audi e-tron GT, RS e-tron GT (FW facelift, updated 2025)

How the SFD2 activation works: We run it as a guided remote session — you plug your ENet cable into a Windows PC, share your screen, and we perform the OEM activation on your VIN through a properly authenticated channel. The car ends up with the exact same Matrix behaviour as the pre-SFD2 model years. No dealer visit, no firmware modifications, no security bypasses.

SFD2 pricing: base activation price + €100 SFD2 surcharge (covers the authenticated remote session and the additional VIN verification cycle). So a 2024 Audi RS 6 Avant Matrix activation is €200 + €100 = €300 total. A 2025 A8 D5 Matrix activation is likewise €300 total.

Confirmation before payment: We verify your specific VIN and model year before you pay a cent — you never pay for an activation until we have positively confirmed it will succeed on your car.
