How to Activate Traffic Sign Recognition on Your Audi

Your Audi's front camera can read speed limit signs and display them right in your dashboard. The hardware is already there — it just needs to be activated. No dealer visit, no VCDS, no coding experience required.

What Is Traffic Sign Recognition?

Traffic Sign Recognition is an Audi driver assistance feature that uses the vehicle's front camera (PR code QK1) to read road signs in real-time. The system detects:

  • Speed limit signs — Current speed limit displayed directly in the cluster
  • No-passing zones — Indicators for overtaking restrictions
  • End-of-restriction signs — Clears the displayed restriction when you pass the sign

The detected signs appear as small icons in your instrument cluster, Digital Cockpit, or Virtual Cockpit, keeping critical information in your line of sight without needing to look away from the road.

When combined with the navigation system, TSR can also use map data to supplement camera detection, improving accuracy in poor visibility conditions or when signs are obscured.

Why Is TSR Not Already Active on My Audi?

Traffic Sign Recognition is typically offered as a factory option or part of a driver assistance package. However, many vehicles have all the required hardware components installed without the TSR function being enabled:

  • The front camera (PR-QK1) may have been installed as part of another system like lane departure warning or adaptive cruise control
  • The Virtual Cockpit or Digital Instrument Cluster supports displaying TSR data but the feature is not coded as active
  • The navigation system with map data is present but not linked to TSR

In these cases, the feature is literally sitting dormant in your vehicle. RetroLab Pro can activate it without any hardware changes.

What Hardware Does My Audi Need for TSR?

To activate Traffic Sign Recognition, your Audi needs three components:

1. Front Camera (PR-QK1) — The forward-facing camera mounted behind the windshield. This is the camera that reads road signs. 2. Virtual Cockpit or Instrument Cluster Top — Required to display the detected signs. Standard low-line clusters may not support TSR display. 3. Navigation System — The MIB2 or MIB3 navigation unit that supplements camera data with map-based speed information.

If your vehicle has all three components, TSR activation is likely supported. The exact compatibility is confirmed through the VIN review process.
