What You Get

Audi Q8 e-tron, Q8 e-tron Sportback and SQ8 e-tron vehicles delivered to the United States come with one of three headlight configurations — Matrix LED (PR-8G4), Digital Matrix (PR-8G5), or Prepared for Matrix (PR-8G9). In all three cases, the adaptive high beam functionality is software-restricted at delivery. This activation re-enables Matrix segment control at the headlight controller level. The activation method depends on your headlight type and model year: PR-8G4 on 2018–2023 runs through the RetroLab Pro app; all other supported combinations are performed via a guided remote session on a Windows PC.

How It Changes Behavior

From factoryon a stock US-spec Q8 e-tron, the Matrix hardware is physically present but runs in a fixed full-beam mode — no per-segment masking, no adaptive cornering, no dynamic high-beam behaviour.

After activationthe headlight controller takes back individual control of each Matrix LED segment, masking other road users in real time and extending the adaptive high beam at speed — exactly the way the Q8 e-tron's premium lighting hardware was designed to behave.

  • PR-8G4 Matrix LED: app activation (2018–2023) or remote session (2024–2025)
  • PR-8G5 Digital Matrix: remote session across all model years (2018–2025)
  • PR-8G9 Prepared for Matrix: remote session for 2018–2023 only
  • Covers Q8 e-tron, Q8 e-tron Sportback and SQ8 e-tron
  • 100% OEM integration — writes new module data, not a coding flag
  • Guided, VIN-specific OEM activation workflow

Optional Add-Ons During Activation

The following additional lighting options can be enabled in the same session if desired.

  • European single-sided parking light activation (Standlicht)
  • Deactivation of orange side markers for a cleaner front-end appearance

Why Matrix Headlights Are Restricted on US Q8 e-tron Vehicles

Audi Q8 e-tron vehicles delivered to the United States include factory Matrix LED hardware, but the adaptive functionality is limited at the software level due to US lighting regulations. Until recently, NHTSA rules did not allow segmented adaptive high beam, so Audi shipped the cars with the feature disabled. This activation unlocks the Matrix headlights and allows the adaptive system to operate the way Audi designed it — at the discretion of the vehicle owner.

Why the App, Not a Remote Session?

Most providers offering this activation perform it via a remote session — a technician connects to your PC over the internet and runs the process manually. RetroLab Pro does it differently. For 2018–2023 model years the activation runs entirely through the RetroLab Pro app, on your own machine, with no one connecting to your computer.

  • No one accesses your PC — the activation runs locally. You stay in full control throughout the process.
  • No scheduling — activate whenever it suits you. No waiting, no appointment, no time zone coordination.
  • Built-in safety checks — before writing anything, the app verifies your VIN, confirms the correct control unit, and validates the activation data. Incorrect data cannot be sent to the wrong module.
  • Lower price — Matrix activation via the RetroLab Pro app costs €200. Optional add-ons such as RS Animation or Blue Laser are +€50 each.
  • Re-activate at any time — if a dealer visit or software update resets the activation, just run it again. Remote session reactivations are always free. The activation is released as a lifetime service for your VIN at no additional charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which headlight type my Q8 e-tron has?

Check your window sticker or the PR-codes in your vehicle order confirmation. PR-8G4 = Matrix LED (most common), PR-8G5 = Digital Matrix (top-spec option), PR-8G9 = Prepared for Matrix (wiring fitted but no full Matrix module). If you are unsure, send us your VIN and we will confirm before any payment.

I have PR-8G4 Matrix LED — can I use the app?

Yes, if your vehicle is from model year 2018 through 2023. PR-8G4 on those years activates entirely through the RetroLab Pro app on iPhone or Windows PC with an ENet cable (€200). For model years 2024 and 2025, a guided remote session on a Windows PC is required (€300).

I have PR-8G5 Digital Matrix — is that different?

Yes, Digital Matrix uses a pixel-level beam control module that requires a different activation toolchain. All PR-8G5 vehicles are activated via a guided remote session on a Windows PC, regardless of model year (€300).

I have PR-8G9 — what does Prepared for Matrix mean?

PR-8G9 means the wiring harness for Matrix headlights was installed at the factory, but the full Matrix LED module was not. The activation unlocks the Matrix control logic for 2018–2023 vehicles via a remote session (€300). On 2024–2025 models with PR-8G9, the activation is not possible.

Why is PR-8G9 not supported on 2024–2025?

The 2024–2025 Q8 e-tron platform introduced SFD2 security on the gateway that prevents the remote activation toolchain from reaching the headlight controller on PR-8G9 vehicles. PR-8G4 and PR-8G5 use a different access path that remains compatible.

Why do 2024 and 2025 PR-8G4 models require a remote session?

Audi updated the security architecture on 2024+ vehicles with SFD2 protection, which prevents direct app-side access. Our team performs the activation remotely over a guided ENet session on your Windows PC. The result is identical to app years.

Will the activation survive a software update or dealer visit?

Yes. The licence is permanent and VIN-locked — one-time payment, no expiry. Certain dealer software updates (such as an SVM run) or a full module reset can clear it, though a routine service visit won't. Rerun the RetroLab Pro app at no extra charge. Remote session reactivations are always free — lifetime service for your VIN.

Is activating Matrix headlights legal in the United States?

Audi restricted Matrix at the software level to comply with older NHTSA regulations. The hardware is DOT-compliant and factory-installed. The decision to use adaptive high-beam on public roads is at the discretion of the vehicle owner.

Does this work on a Canadian-spec Audi?

Yes. Canadian-spec Audi vehicles are delivered with the same factory Matrix LED hardware as US-spec models — the adaptive beam function is software-restricted at the factory for the same North American regulatory reasons. RetroLab Pro supports NAR-spec (North American Region) vehicles, which covers both US and Canadian market delivery. The activation process, pricing, and hardware requirements are identical.
