Many Audi A7, S7 and RS7 C8 Sportback vehicles delivered to the United States and Canada arrive with the full Matrix LED headlight assembly already installed — yet the adaptive high beam functionality is software-restricted at the factory, leaving the signature Sportback headlights operating as standard LED high beams. This OEM activation re-enables the Matrix segment control at the headlight controller level and restores the adaptive lighting behaviour for which the hardware was originally engineered — equally across A7, S7 and RS7 variants on the C8 platform. Performed through a guided, VIN-specific OEM workflow inside RetroLab Pro — no dealer visit required. For 2024–2025 model years, SFD must be unlocked on the vehicle first. Many Audi vehicles delivered to the United States and Canada include factory Matrix LED hardware, but the advanced adaptive lighting functionality is limited at the software level due to regional lighting regulations. Until recently, NHTSA rules did not allow segmented adaptive high beam, so Audi shipped the cars with the feature disabled even though the hardware was present. This activation unlocks the Matrix headlights and allows the adaptive lighting system to operate closer to its intended design — at the discretion of the vehicle owner.
Why the App, Not a Remote Session?
Most providers offering this activation perform it via a remote session — a technician connects to your PC over the internet and runs the process manually. RetroLab Pro does it differently. For 2018–2023 model years the activation runs entirely through the RetroLab Pro app, on your own machine, with no one connecting to your computer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this work on the S7 and RS7 as well?
Yes — the S7 and RS7 share the same headlight platform as the A7 C8 Sportback. All three variants are fully supported, and all have both Matrix LED and Laser LED headlight configurations available on the C8 chassis.
I have Laser headlights — does that change anything?
No change to compatibility. The Matrix activation works identically on Matrix LED and Matrix LED + Laser headlights. If you have Laser headlights, the optional Blue Laser Light add-on (+€50) is also available to activate the blue laser accent lamp. Note: the orange side marker is automatically disabled as part of the Blue Laser activation.
Can I also get the RS Animation?
Yes — the RS Animation (+€50) is available as an optional add-on for A7 and S7 on model years up to 2023. RS7 variants already have the RS animation active from the factory.
How does activation work on 2024 and 2025 models?
2024+ models have SFD (Secure Feature Distribution) protection on the headlight module. If you can unlock SFD using a compatible diagnostic tool, the app-based activation applies at €200 — same process as earlier model years. If you cannot unlock SFD, a guided remote session handles the full process for €300. The end result is identical in both cases.
Which model years are supported?
All A7, S7 and RS7 C8 from 2019 through 2025 with factory Matrix or Laser headlights. Model years 2019–2023 activate via the RetroLab Pro app (€200). Model years 2024–2025: app-based at €200 if SFD is unlocked on the vehicle, or guided remote session at €300 if not.
Do I need a dealer visit or specialist tools?
No dealer visit required. App years (2019–2023) need only an iPhone or Windows PC with an ENet cable. For 2024–2025: app path (SFD unlocked by you) requires an iPhone or Windows PC + ENet cable; remote session path requires a Windows PC + ENet cable (iPhone not supported for remote sessions). The activation takes around 20 minutes.
Will the activation survive a software update or dealer visit?
Yes. The licence is permanent and VIN-locked — one-time payment, no expiry. Certain dealer software updates (such as an SVM run) or a full module reset can clear it, though a routine service visit won't. Rerun the RetroLab Pro app at no extra charge. Remote session reactivations are always free — lifetime service for your VIN.
Is activating Matrix headlights legal in the United States?
Audi restricted Matrix at the software level to comply with older NHTSA regulations. The hardware is DOT-compliant and factory-installed. The decision to use adaptive high-beam on public roads is at the discretion of the vehicle owner.
Does this work on a Canadian-spec Audi?
Yes. Canadian-spec Audi vehicles are delivered with the same factory Matrix LED hardware as US-spec models — the adaptive beam function is software-restricted at the factory for the same North American regulatory reasons. RetroLab Pro supports NAR-spec (North American Region) vehicles, which covers both US and Canadian market delivery. The activation process, pricing, and hardware requirements are identical.
