Audi Lane Assist — sometimes marketed as Active Lane Keeping, Active Lane Assist, or in German Spurhalteassistent — is Audi's factory lane-keeping system on the MLBevo platform (A4 B9, A5 F5 and their siblings from 2016 onwards). It has two working parts, both of which happen at the same time whenever the system is enabled:
1. Lane-departure warning. The PR-QK1 front camera behind the rear-view mirror continuously tracks the road markings ahead of your car. If you start crossing a marked line without your turn signal on, the cluster (or Virtual Cockpit) briefly flashes a lane icon, and depending on your configuration you also get a light haptic pulse through the seat belt or steering wheel. This is the low-intervention warning layer — the car is telling you "hey, you're drifting" without doing anything to the wheel.
2. Active steering correction. If Lane Assist decides you are actually leaving the lane (still no indicator, still crossing the line), it applies a gentle corrective torque to the electric power steering, nudging the car back inside the lane markings. The intervention is small — Lane Assist is *not* self-driving, it will not steer you around corners on its own — but it is enough to catch a momentary lapse of attention on the motorway before it becomes a lane change into another car.
The system only works above roughly 65 km/h (40 mph), only when the camera can clearly see the markings on both sides (or one side plus a road edge), and always defers to the driver — the moment you put a firm hand on the wheel, corrections stop.
On a factory-coded A4 or A5, Lane Assist is on by default at every ignition cycle, and the driver switches it on or off via a dedicated button on the indicator / wiper stalk. That last part is important for what comes next.
