How to Unlock Functions on Demand (FoD) on Audi e-tron GE

Your Audi e-tron GE was built with hardware for Matrix LED headlights, CarPlay, Android Auto, TSR, DAB and Park Assist already fitted at the factory. Whether those features are available to you depends on how Audi configured FoD for your market and VIN — and for many owners, the official purchase path simply doesn't exist. This guide explains what FoD is, who it applies to, and how RetroLab Pro activates it.

What Is Functions on Demand (FoD)?

Audi's Functions on Demand (FoD) is an over-the-air software system that sells feature unlocks for hardware already installed in your vehicle. On the e-tron GE (2018–2023), up to five features are available via FoD:

  • Matrix LED Headlights — adaptive high-beam masking that illuminates the full road ahead while keeping oncoming traffic in the dark; includes dynamic cornering light and motorway beam
  • Audi Smartphone Interface — Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (wired; wireless on MMI software 2711+)
  • Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) — reads speed limit and warning signs in real time via the front camera, displayed in the Virtual Cockpit
  • DAB / DAB+ Digital Radio — activates the DAB tuner chip already present in the head unit
  • Park Assist / Park Assist Plus — semi-autonomous steering into parallel and perpendicular parking spaces

All of this hardware is present in your car. FoD is purely a software gate.

Who Needs This Activation?

FoD can only be purchased through the myAudi app or Audi Connect Store when Audi has made it available for your specific market and VIN. There are three common situations where it isn't:

1. Imported vehicles — an e-tron originally configured for one market (e.g. US/NAR) and then registered in another may have certain FoD features that are not available to purchase on that VIN. The myAudi app will simply show nothing for those features.

2. Unsupported markets — FoD was not made available by Audi in all countries. If your vehicle is registered in a market without FoD support, the Audi Connect Store won't list the features for your VIN.

3. Factory configuration — some vehicles shipped with certain FoD features not available for purchase, depending on trim level, production date or dealer configuration.

In all three situations, the hardware for these features is already fitted in the vehicle — it just hasn't been switched on for that VIN. RetroLab Pro enables the features through a guided remote session by configuring the relevant control modules directly.

How the Activation Works

FoD activation on the e-tron GE is carried out as a remote session — it is not available through the RetroLab Pro app. Enabling FoD on this platform requires a thorough configuration of several control modules, which is done live during the remote session.

What the process looks like:

  1. You send us your VIN — we verify which FoD features are present in your vehicle before any payment
  2. We schedule a remote session (typically 45–60 minutes)
  3. You connect your Windows PC to the car's OBD2 port via an ENet cable and share your screen
  4. We configure all eligible features live — everything is done in a single session
  5. You restart the MMI; the features are active

The result is permanent, specific to your VIN. Certain dealer software updates can clear it — just rerun the app at no extra charge.
