Built-in ActivationFlagship luxury with US-restricted headlights — this activation finally lets your A8 and S8's Matrix and Laser hardware behave the way Audi designed them.
Audi A8 D5, A8 L D5 and S8 vehicles delivered to the United States and Canada come from the factory with the full Matrix LED — and on Laser-equipped trims, the Laser hardware — fitted into the flagship housings. Yet the adaptive high beam functionality is software-restricted before delivery, leaving the A8 and S8 lighting the road like a regular LED sedan despite the premium hardware. This OEM activation re-enables Matrix segment control on the headlight controller and restores the adaptive lighting behaviour the A8 was originally engineered to deliver — HD Matrix, Laser at speed, dynamic cornering, all as intended — equally across A8 D5, A8 L and S8 variants. Performed through a guided, VIN-specific OEM workflow inside RetroLab Pro — no dealer visit, no remote coding session, no manual scripts.
From factoryon a stock US-spec A8 D5 or S8, the Matrix LEDs and Laser unit are physically present but constrained to a fixed full-beam mode. No segment masking, no adaptive cornering, no Laser activation at speed.
After activationthe headlight controller takes back individual control of each Matrix LED segment and engages the Laser at motorway speeds, masking other road users in real time and extending the high-beam range the way the A8's flagship lighting hardware was designed to operate.
The following additional lighting options can be enabled in the same session if desired.
Audi vehicles delivered to the United States and Canada include factory Matrix LED hardware, but the advanced adaptive lighting functionality is limited at the software level due to regional lighting regulations. Until recently, NHTSA rules did not allow segmented adaptive high beam, so Audi shipped the cars with the feature disabled even though the hardware was present. This activation unlocks the Matrix headlights and allows the adaptive lighting system to operate closer to its intended design — at the discretion of the vehicle owner.
Most providers offering this activation perform it via a remote session — a technician connects to your PC over the internet and runs the process manually. RetroLab Pro does it differently. For 2018–2023 model years the activation runs entirely through the RetroLab Pro app, on your own machine, with no one connecting to your computer.
A8 D5, A8 L D5, S8 D5 — US-spec (2018–2025) with Matrix HD LED and optional Laser headlights
Yes — the A8 D5, A8 L D5 and S8 D5 all share the same headlight architecture. All three variants are fully supported across model years 2018–2025. The activation process and result are identical regardless of body style or performance trim.
No change to compatibility. The Matrix activation works on both Matrix HD LED and Laser headlight variants. If your A8 or S8 is equipped with the Laser module, the optional Blue Laser Light add-on (+€50) is also available to activate the signature blue laser accent lamp.
The A8 D5 ships with Matrix HD LED as standard — a premium module with a higher number of individually controlled LED segments compared to the Matrix LED found on smaller models. Both the Matrix HD and the Laser high beam unit are fully re-enabled by this activation.
Audi updated the security architecture on 2024+ vehicles with SFD2 protection, which prevents direct app-side access to the headlight module. Our team performs the activation remotely over a guided ENet session on your Windows PC. The result is identical to earlier model years.
All A8 D5, A8 L D5 and S8 D5 from 2018 through 2025 with factory Matrix HD LED or Laser headlights. Model years 2018–2023 activate via the RetroLab Pro app (€200). Model years 2024–2025 require a guided remote session on a Windows PC (€300).
No dealer visit required. App years (2018–2023) need only an iPhone or Windows PC with an ENet cable. Remote session years (2024–2025) require a Windows PC with an ENet cable. The activation itself takes around 20 minutes.
Yes. The licence is permanent and VIN-locked — one-time payment, no expiry. Certain dealer software updates (such as an SVM run) or a full module reset can clear it, though a routine service visit won't. Rerun the RetroLab Pro app at no extra charge. Remote session reactivations are always free — lifetime service for your VIN.
Audi restricted Matrix at the software level to comply with older NHTSA regulations. The hardware is DOT-compliant and factory-installed. The decision to use adaptive high-beam on public roads is at the discretion of the vehicle owner.
Yes. Canadian-spec Audi vehicles are delivered with the same factory Matrix LED hardware as US-spec models — the adaptive beam function is software-restricted at the factory for the same North American regulatory reasons. RetroLab Pro supports NAR-spec (North American Region) vehicles, which covers both US and Canadian market delivery. The activation process, pricing, and hardware requirements are identical.
