Audi Functions on Demand (FoD) Unlock — Fix Broken, Locked or Region-Missing FoD on MIB3

Audi Functions on Demand — abbreviated FoD, sometimes called *"Audi Connect Features"* or *"Functions on Demand from the Audi Connect Store"* — is Audi's official post-sale feature unlock program launched with the MIB3 infotainment platform. The idea is simple: Audi ships cars with the physical hardware already installed (Matrix LED headlights, radar sensors for TSR, DAB tuner chip in the head unit, front/rear parking sensors, the MIB3 software stack that supports CarPlay and Android Auto), and then lets the owner buy the software unlock later through the myAudi app or the Audi Connect Store on the MMI.

You can buy features:

• As a one-time permanent unlock (Matrix, DAB, some Smartphone Interface markets)
• As a subscription (monthly / yearly — Park Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Light Assist in some regions)
• As a free trial (usually 30 days) to test before you commit

It works cleanly in the countries and vehicle configurations that Audi decided to support. When it doesn't work, it goes silent in your app — no error, no support path, no unlock offered at any price. That's where this guide becomes relevant.

Scenario 1 — US car imported to Europe (or vice versa). This is the most common broken-FoD case we see. A vehicle built for the North American market gets imported to the EU, UK, Switzerland or Norway. The hardware is identical — the same MIB3 head unit, the same Matrix headlights (or in some cases, hardware with Matrix disabled at the country-code level), the same radar cluster. But the myAudi app authenticates based on the original vehicle configuration and the country registration mismatch, and the Audi Connect Store simply refuses to list any features for that VIN. The car sits with hardware it cannot use, and the owner has no purchase path — dealer visits confirm the situation but do not fix it.

Scenario 2 — the country does not offer FoD at all. Audi Functions on Demand rolled out gradually and is still not offered in every market. Regions where FoD is either limited, patchy or absent include most of the Middle East, parts of Africa, several Eastern European markets, most of South America, Southeast Asia outside a handful of countries, Australia (partial), and until recently much of the CIS. If you bought your MIB3 Audi from a dealer in one of those markets, the myAudi app will show either an empty FoD catalog or a "not available in your region" message — even though the hardware in your car is identical to a German-spec car that has full FoD access.

Scenario 3 — factory configuration lock. Some MIB3 features were shipped configurable but disabled by default when the specific trim/package the car left the factory with did not include them. The hardware is there — but the SVM (Software Version Management) flag on the head unit or the gateway says "this feature is not licensed on this VIN." Audi Connect Store does not always expose these behind FoD purchase (varies by region and package combination). This is the "the car has DAB but the tuner is inactive and Audi will not sell me the unlock" case.

All three scenarios have the same underlying cause: the hardware is present but the coding on your specific VIN says the feature is disabled, and the official Audi purchase path is either broken or absent. RetroLab Pro codes those flags directly at the ECU level via a remote diagnostic session, which is why the fix works regardless of which region your car came from or which market you are currently in.

We handle the five most commonly locked FoD features on the MIB3 platform. All are one-time, permanent, VIN-locked activations that survive dealer software updates and battery disconnects:

1. Matrix LED Headlights (Adaptive High Beam) Full Matrix functionality: dynamic high-beam masking around oncoming and preceding vehicles, adverse-weather modes, tour/motorway light, junction light, all-weather beam. Applies to Audi cars fitted with Matrix-capable LED headlight hardware where the feature is currently disabled or region-locked. Includes A4 B9, A5 F5, A6 C8, A7 C8, A8 D5, Q3 F3, Q5 FY, Q7 4M, Q8 4M, e-tron GE and e-tron GT (subject to specific PR code and year — we confirm per VIN).

2. Audi Smartphone Interface — Apple CarPlay + Android Auto Full Smartphone Interface activation on MIB3 head units where it is either not listed in the Connect Store or blocked by region/import status. Wired CarPlay and Android Auto work immediately; wireless works on head-unit software version 2711 and above (we do not update your MIB3 software as part of this service — if you need a specific version, that is a separate consideration).

3. Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR / Verkehrszeichenerkennung) Activates the front-camera-based TSR system that reads speed limits, no-overtake zones and additional information plaques and displays them in the digital cockpit and head-up display. Requires the front camera + relevant driver-assistance ECU present in the car — we verify before quoting.

4. DAB / DAB+ Digital Radio Enables the DAB tuner chip already present in the MIB3 head unit. Standard on virtually every MIB3 car built for EU/UK markets — but locked on many imports and on cars where DAB was not selected as a factory option. Includes DAB slideshow, DAB service-follow and DAB-to-FM handover where hardware supports.

5. Park Assist / Park Assist Plus Semi-autonomous parking (parallel + perpendicular, entry and exit). Requires front + rear parking sensors and the compatible driver-assistance ECU — confirmed per VIN. Includes trailer maneuver assist where hardware supports it.

MIB3 only. All five above are MIB3-platform features. If your car has the older MHI2P infotainment (mostly pre-2021 A6/A7/A8/Q7/Q8), Smartphone Interface is coded through a different — cheaper — path listed elsewhere on this site. FoD is a MIB3 concept and does not exist on MHI2P.

Our FoD unlock service is priced at a flat €300 — one payment, one remote session, all five features included if applicable to your vehicle. Not €300 per feature. €300 total.

What that gets you:

If you only need one feature — for example just Matrix on an imported car — we do not have a lower per-feature price at this time. The €300 flat covers every FoD feature eligible on your VIN in a single remote session.

This is where FoD unlock differs from the built-in activations elsewhere on this site: FoD unlock cannot be done through the RetroLab Pro app. The app handles direct VIN-approved activations we control end-to-end. FoD flags live deeper in the ECU coding and require live-session tools that we run from our end during a scheduled remote session.

What you need on your side:

1. A Windows PC or laptop with a physical LAN (Ethernet / RJ45) port. Not USB-to-Ethernet — a real LAN port. Most desktop PCs and older laptops have one; ultrathin laptops (MacBook, Dell XPS 13, etc.) often do not. 2. An ENet cable (Ethernet-to-OBD) — the €25-40 blue-plug cable that connects your car's OBD-II port to the LAN port on your PC. We do not sell these; we can link recommended sources. Any working ENet cable works — no specific brand required. 3. A stable power source for the car during the session — either a charger connected, or a full battery. The session takes 30-60 minutes and the car must not go to sleep or drop below ~12.4V. 4. TeamViewer or AnyDesk installed on the PC so we can drive the coding tools remotely while you watch every step. 5. The car parked with the LAN port on the PC connected to the OBD-II port via the ENet cable, ignition on (not just accessory — full ignition, engine can be off or running, both work).

Session flow:

1. You send your VIN — we confirm which FoD features are eligible within 24 hours. Free. 2. We schedule a session (typically same-week, weekdays 09:00–18:00 CET or by arrangement). 3. Payment of €300 is taken before the session starts. 4. You connect your PC to the car with the ENet cable, share TeamViewer/AnyDesk with us, and confirm the car is ready. 5. We work the coding tools live — you watch on your screen. Every module changed is logged. 6. Full DTC scan + clear at the end. Sanity check that each unlocked feature actually appears and works (Matrix menu visible, DAB list scanning, CarPlay handshake with your phone, etc.). 7. You disconnect. The activation is permanent from this point.

Total time from cable plug-in to feature-working is typically 30-60 minutes depending on how many of the five features apply to your car.

We want to be transparent about scope so nobody pays €300 for something we cannot deliver:

Not covered:

• SFD2-locked features on 2024+ vehicles where the specific coding path requires online Audi authentication we do not have. We check this per VIN before quoting — if your car is SFD2-locked for the specific feature you want, we tell you and do not take the job. This is currently rare for the five features listed above on 2018-2023 MIB3 cars, but affects some 2024+ models.

• Head-unit software updates — if your MIB3 needs to jump from an older software version to enable wireless CarPlay, that is a separate dealer/OTA operation, not something we do.
• Hardware retrofits where the hardware itself is not in the car — for example, if the Matrix headlight hardware was never installed at the factory, no amount of coding will enable it. That is a hardware retrofit, covered separately.
• Non-MIB3 vehicles — the €300 flat FoD unlock is a MIB3-only service. MHI2P Smartphone Interface, Q7 4M pre-facelift TSR, and pre-MIB3 DAB retrofits use different tooling and different pricing.
• Region-locked Audi Connect online services — Google Earth streaming, real-time traffic, online-search POI, Alexa integration and other cloud services depend on the myAudi backend accepting your VIN in your registration country. We can unlock the local infotainment features (Matrix, DAB, CarPlay, TSR, Park Assist), but cloud-side Connect services stay Audi-controlled.

If any of the above applies to your case we tell you before you pay — no surprises, no half-jobs.

If your Audi has the hardware but the software says no — because it was imported, because your country does not offer FoD, or because the factory configuration locked it — send us your VIN. We confirm within 24 hours which of the five features are eligible on your specific car, and quote the flat €300 (or tell you honestly if we cannot help).
